Common Causes of Car Accidents

Everyone has their own car accident story. They’ve either been in one, know someone who has, or they’ve witnessed one happen. The details, like where the drivers were going or what type of cars were involved, are always different. But chances are high that the potential cause, or causes, of the accident are very common. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that human error causes 94% of car accidents. The vast majority of them fall into six different categories.

Six Most Common Causes of Car Accidents

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving can be anything that takes your eyes off of the road, hands off of the wheel, or your mind away from focusing on the task of driving. Since this encompasses everything from changing the volume to daydreaming, it’s obvious why this is the number one cause of car accidents in America.

Speeding

Some drivers find speed limits frustrating, but they absolutely lead to safer roads and saved lives. Single car accidents are difficult enough to deal with, but having to cover the costs of repairs or medical treatment for others can cause your insurance to skyrocket. Is arriving five minutes earlier worth the risk of causing an accident?

DUI

Driving under the influence includes alcohol, marijuana, and even certain prescription medications. On top of repairs to your car, you’ll have to deal with the legal costs of being charged with DUI. If you have to ask yourself if you’re sober enough to drive, then it’s best to let someone else take the wheel.

Aggressive Driving

Driving can be a frustrating task. Rush hour, gridlock, “slow drivers”, and even minor mistakes by others can cause people to drive aggressively. When feelings are running hot, drivers are more likely to tailgate, speed, change lanes without signaling, and cut off other drivers. All of that highly increases the chances of a collision.

Weather Conditions

Around 20% of car accidents are attributed to adverse weather conditions with poor visibility and slick roads as the primary causes. Drivers should slow down and keep their distance from other vehicles when it’s raining or when fog is present to factor in the extra time you’ll need to identify when the car in front of you is breaking or if an object is in the road.

Fatigue

Not getting enough sleep is common among adults. We all experience the stresses of work and daily life, and it can be surprisingly easy to doze off while behind the wheel. It’s important to recognize when you’re starting to show signs of fatigue so you can prevent an accident.

Be Aware Before and During Your Drive

We see the results of these factors on a daily basis. By being aware of the most common causes of car accidents, you can identify situations to avoid and when to give someone else the keys.
